How to Choose Where to Live When Moving to France

Moving to France is exciting… and sometimes overwhelming. With so many beautiful regions, cultural differences, and practical decisions to make, it’s easy to feel a bit lost. So where do you start when trying to find your future home?

1. Get clear on your priorities

Before you start browsing maps or rental listings, take a moment to reflect. Do you need peace and quiet, or do you thrive on urban energy? Are you drawn to the sea, the mountains, or the buzz of a big city? Do you have children who need schooling? The perfect place doesn’t exist—but there is a place that fits your reality and your current lifestyle.

2. Consider your lifestyle

If you’re used to a fast-paced, social environment, cities like Paris, Lyon, or Bordeaux may suit you well. If you’re looking for more space, nature, and simplicity, mid-sized cities like Annecy, Nantes, or Montpellier offer a great balance. Think about transport options, cost of living, and the presence of an international community.

3. If you can, explore in person

Spend a few days in the cities you’re considering. Walk around different neighborhoods, try the local transport, observe the rhythm of daily life. Nothing beats the feeling you get when you’re actually there.

4. Stay flexible

Your first choice doesn’t have to be final. Sometimes what seemed ideal at first no longer fits after a few months—and that’s okay. It’s not a failure; it’s just part of the journey. Give yourself the freedom to adjust.
