How to Settle In When You First Arrive in France

Arriving in a new country is so much more than just unpacking your bags. It often comes with a mix of excitement, uncertainty, and sometimes, loneliness. Integration isn’t just about paperwork or learning the language—it’s an inner process. It can take time, but it’s always worth it.

1. Start by observing—without judgment

France has its own habits, rhythms, and sense of humor… sometimes charming, sometimes frustrating. Take time to understand before you compare. Real adaptation begins with listening and observing.

2. Learn the language, even imperfectly

Speaking French—even with mistakes or a strong accent—opens many doors. French people genuinely appreciate the effort. A warm “bonjour,” a kind word to your local baker… it can make a real difference.

3. Don’t be afraid to connect

Join local groups, attend events or workshops—even online ones. Never underestimate the power of small connections. They often lead to meaningful relationships and a stronger sense of belonging.

4. Accept the ups and downs

Integration isn’t a straight line. There will be days filled with doubt, fatigue, or homesickness. That’s normal. What matters most is not to go through it alone. Talk about it. Reach out for support if you need it.

5. Reclaim your sense of agency

You’re not just a passive “expat” trying to cope. You are an active participant in this new chapter. Reconnect with what brings you joy, create new routines, explore your surroundings, and move forward—one step at a time.
